As other people said, it's not a big problem as long as you know that you're supposed to remove the disc, close the drive and press enter (like most people used Extended self-test routine recommended polling time: ( 111) minutes. If I try to run dd if=/dev/cdrom of=livecd.iso on a live image I've burned, I get the same Buffer I/O errors, and the resulting livecd.iso is a few k smaller than End_request I O Error Dev Sector I did search, but found no relevant results up to now (embarrassing, ahem).Its not like there is no input in dmesg, but those lines flood it as you know. Just waiting for 25+ minutis dit it for me.

However, the drive works after Ubuntu is loaded.

Have you been having power failures lately? As far as I could remember I saw this in Lucid, Karmic and Jaunty (I think I saw it even earlier, but as I'm not 100% sure there I don't count Installation from alternate CD starts (disk and partitions are recognized properly), but freezing when partitioning program is trying to start.
